The Utah Hunting and Fishing mobile app, designed to provide sportsmen in the state with information directly on their phones, has been recognized in a national app competition, according to the Deseret News. The app was built by the state’s department of technology services and is among 30 finalists in the contest.

In explaining the success of the app, officials at the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources told the Deseret News that the platform was built to provide fishers and hunters with useful information to help them enjoy activities throughout the state. And the app is one of the first out there to allow electronic versions of licenses and permits.

“Official digital documents are a new concept for state governments,” said David Fletcher, chief technology officer with the Utah Department of Technology Services, to the Deseret News. “Providing access to digital copies of licenses is conceptually innovative and has tremendous potential for increasing government efficiency.”

There is no limit to the number of licenses that can be stored on the app, says Fletcher, and it also keeps users updated with hunting dates, application periods and watchable wildlife events. The app, which has seen 22,000 downloads so far, is a finalist in the 2015 Igniting Innovation Awards.
