The internet was abuzz with speculation earlier in April when a bright pink, ugly fish got caught off the coast of Mexico. But the mystery of what kind of fish it is has been solved.

Many called it an “alien fish,” but turns out the little guy is really an albino swell shark. Those are extremely rare, biologists say, so perhaps it’s not surprising that few people had ever seen one before.

A researcher speaking to the Chicago Tribune said that there are swell sharks living in the area where the fish was caught. Still, the scientist admitted that he had never seen an albino one before.

Swell sharks are so called because they swell up when they feel threatened. Their appearance normally mimics that of leopard sharks and they grow to about 39 inches long.
