Serbian angler with woodstove strapped to back: ‘Some people say I lost my mind’

I’ve fished in the cold with a pocket handwarmer filled with lighter fluid ignited with an open flame, which seemed like a questionable choice and an invitation for second-degree burns the first time out. It worked, but it was child’s play compared with an angler who hit a Serbian river with a smoke-belching stove strapped to his back.

According to In Serbia News, the man’s name is Jovan Stojanovic, and the stove-as-backpack idea came to him after watching fishermen near South Morava freezing on the banks. A sheet of cardboard apparently keeps the rusty, clanking stove from burning him. The stove also has the advantage of providing a place to cook his catch right on the water, though he lost his frying pan after an animated hook set and missed strike.

Lest anyone think a man with a wood-burning stove tied to his body has lost his grip on reality, Stojanovic waxed philosophical for In Serbia News: “Some people say I lost my mind. Why does everything that is unusual have to be a reflection of a madman? Don’t people know how to make jokes anymore and bring some joy in their lives,” he said.
