It may not be the most popular activity, but sharpening hooks regularly is a must if you want to keep catching fish. This is because just going through the regular motions of fishing, like hitting rocks or fishing through brush, can dull your hooks pretty quickly.

If you want to keep them sharp, it’s actually pretty simple. Just grab a file and then run the hook points along it using minimal pressure. Doing this helps to avoid pricking yourself while also preventing the likelihood you might bend a hook point. Do this for each hook point on a bait and then go to the next one in your tackle box and repeat the process.

To check if your hooks are sharp, just pick it up and see if the hooks “stick” to your skin (not to the point of cutting). If they stick easily to your hand, chances are they’ll hook up nicely when it comes time to actually catch a fish.
