Tired of tangles when you get to putting new line on your reel? Well there’s no need to fret anymore, thanks to a few tips we have for you below.

Probably the most obvious way to reduce line tangles is to put new line on your reel as carefully as you can, watching for things like knots and kinks. Open the bail and run the line through the bottom eye of the rod. Tie a standard arbor knot or another go-to. Lay the spool of line flat on the floor, then close the bail. As you align the bottom rod guide and pull line through, slowly apply pressure to the line so that it’s packed tightly around the spool.

Another technique that isn’t common but is still useful is to soak your line in warm water before you begin to put it on. The process is exactly the same, but helped by softening the line with the heated water. Chiefly, it makes the line a little more limp and pliable.

Lastly, consider applying some line conditioner before going out to your favorite lake. The key here is to put on a few sprays the night before your big trip and let it settle in to make your line (already on the reel) smoother on the cast and the retrieve.
