The fishackathon is an interesting competition that began in 2013. Back then, it didn’t have too many competitors. But it has blossomed into a big event in just the past few years.

The whole idea behind the annual competition is for teams to find innovative ways to gather and use data to find solutions to the fisheries problems going on in our world’s oceans. So that could be through the development of smartphone apps or new search engines. Really anything is in play.

At the most recent fishackathon, which took place simultaneously in 43 cities around the country, teams competed for a $10,000 prize and the chance to develop their project with a U.S. government contractor. The winner is planned to be announced on World Oceans Day.
